what is the optical zoom of this lens?

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=148&modelid=14907#ModelDetailAct

how can I know each lens what's the optical zoom of it? on the canon website they don't mention it.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question, thank you.

"Optical zoom" (3x, 5x, 10x, etc.) is really a poor way to measure the distance rating of a lens. "3x" just means "at maximum zoom, images appear three times closer than at minimum zoom"... but if you don't know what the minimum zoom is, it doesn't give you any real information. That's why professional lenses are rated by focal length. If you have a focal length of 18mm on a 35mm camera, you pretty much know how close/wide your picture will be, regardless of the manufacturer.

But if you must think of it in those terms, then a 16-35mm lens is about a 2x optical zoom lens, because 35 divided by 16 is about 2.

A 16-35mm lens isn't a zoom lens in any way; it's a wide-angle lens, designed for close-up photography (or panoramic landscape photography).

Introduction

Canon is a worldwide known name in the world of photography. To sustain this image, the company puts emphasis on the quality rather than the brand name. This objective has helped it become a brand to reckon with. One such model that makes Canon live up to its name is this Canon Digital IXUS 75 digital camera.

Design

It is ultra-compact in size, measuring 91.6 x 56.8 x 19.6mm and weighing 130g without battery or card. The Canon Digital IXUS 75 camera is a beautiful designed model, with an attractive two-part metal and plastic body. The camera can be handled reasonably well, but the finish is quite slippery and the slightly sloping front panel gives nothing to grip. The zoom control, which is as usual a rotary collar around the shutter button, is rather awkward to use, especially when operating the camera one-handed.

Controls

The position slider is on the top panel which can be used to select video mode, scene mode and program auto. The other controls are small, due to the space taken up by that big monitor screen on the compact camera.

Key Features

Canon IXUS 75 digital camera is a 7.1 megapixel replacement for the Canon Digital IXUS 65 camera. The large 3-inch LCD monitor and face detection focusing complement the camera. The LCD monitor has 230,000 pixels. it is very bright with excellent contrast and color. It anti glare finish, so Canon IXUS 75 digital camera can be used in bright sunlight without a problem. Unlike many other models in the IXUS range, the Canon IXUS 75 digital camera has no optical viewfinder.

The video mode offers a maximum of 640 x 480 resolutions at 30fps, with mono audio. Scene mode offers ten scene programs. It also has completely different settings like aquarium and underwater, for use with the optional underwater case. In the scene program mode options such as white balance, metering mode and color adjustment are not available. You can only access these in program auto mode, via the function menu.

Performance

As usual, the overall performance of Canon Digital IXUS 75 camera is its highlight. It starts up very quickly in approximately one second. The AF system is exceptionally quick. It is one of the fastest on any compact camera. It gives good performance in low light conditions. Even the focusing of Canon Digital IXUS 75 camera is quick in the dark thanks to a good AF assist light. The Face Detection is also good.

The shooting performance is also extremely impressive of Canon IXUS 75 digital camera. In single shot mode, the interval between each shot is 1.5 seconds. In continuous shooting mode, the speed is 1.7 frames per second. With a 1GB card you can get 322 shots at maximum quality and resolution. The battery is surprisingly small at only 760mAh, for which you can get about 210 shots.

The brilliant color reproduction, reliably accurate metering, good dynamic range and the distortion-free quality of the lens especially at wide angle of Canon IXUS 75 digital camera but for some reason the final images simply lack fine detail. Image noise is consistent at ISO settings above 200.

Conclusion

The Canon IXUS 75 digital camera has the potential to be the best pocket compact on the market, with ultra-quick performance, attractive styling and excellent optical quality.

Canon, which is well known throughout the world for its quality cameras, released the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera on August 20th of 2003. At this time there were other well known digital cameras on the market but the new features of the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera made this digital camera well worth looking into.

The various camera experts who have reviewed this Canon camera state that the price tag of $900 makes this a moderately priced digital camera that you can buy in various countries around the world.

If you are looking to buy your camera outside of the United States you might want to be aware of what the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera is called in other countries. For instance the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera will be called the Canon EOS 300D in Europe and in Japan you will hear it being referred to as the Kiss Digital.

For the digital camera enthusiast there is also a Canon EOS Rebel digital camera kit that can be bought. This kit contains an EF-S 18-55 mm 3x lens. The price of the entire digital camera kit is $100, more than the single camera.

The various specifications of the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera include a 6 megapixel CMOS sensor and image processor. The sensor and image processor are housed in the inexpensive plastic body of the digital camera.

To help their customers buy this camera the people at Canon have given the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera a pentamirror instead of a pentaprism. These various modifications have helped to reduce the cost of this camera, which therefore makes this digital camera more affordable.

There are a host of new features that you can find in the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera. These features include contrast, saturation and sharpness settings which can be adjusted for your various needs. There is also a new default parameter setting on the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera which is referred to as Parameter 1.

The Canon EOS Rebel digital camera was the first digital camera to support the use of a new lens called EF-S. The S in the lens’s name stands for short back focus. This lens can only be used with the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera as the other Canon Rebel series cameras will not have the necessary support for this lens.

For the enthusiastic novice or professional photographer, the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera is for you. The many great interesting features and functions to be found on the camera coincide very nicely with the reasonable price tag on it which only makes the camera more appealing.

What Macro Zoom lens is best for Canon DLSR?

I need to find a macro zoom lens for Canon Rebel XT. Price range - up to $ 1,200.00 USD. I am looking for suggestions on which lens is the best quality for my price range.

Thanks!

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro is one of Canon's true macro lens.

Notice it is not a zoom lens. This macro lens is for use in critical macro environments such as scientific research, medical photography and investigations where edge to edge sharpness and luminance as well as the ability to take photos of subjects at a true 1:1 image ratio is required.

If you search the Internet you will find that the only zoom macro lenses for your camera are made by third-party manufacturers. Sigma and Tamron both make a variety of zoom macro lenses. Lenses in the 24-85mm range are the least bulky, but your needs will dictate what lens you eventually choose.

The term macro photography is a situation whereby you get up close and personal with your subject. True macro photography is working on approximately 1:1 ratios or closer. This produces an image that is true to the size or much larger than the subject being photographed. It is easy to get confused with this type of photography in terms of what is considered really macro. Normally macro photography ranges from life size 1:1 up to ten times enlargement 10:1, which is believed to be the exact definition of macro photography.

To take great macro photography, you will need to invest in the appropriate equipment. To just buy a lens and focus on close hoping for a good shot is not the way to do it. You will need to have a good camera, like a Canon or Nikon, and a good macro lens with a good zoom factor. A good camera to use is a Canon 1DS Mark III with a 110mm macro lens

Choosing a subject can be quite tricky. It can sometimes be difficult to get a good depth of field with macro photography, especially if you are shooting a part of an object in an abstract sense.

For example: if you are shooting part of a candlestick that is ornate, it's important to get the lighting right as well as having the vision to begin with. Often this can work out quite well whereby DOF is lacking allowing for high magnification and originality.

However, when shooting insects and such alike, magnification is important. Therefore, DOF is also reduced but makes up an integral part of the image.

Without being too technical, to increase your DOF you will need to set your camera on a higher F number-the F-stop. The highest is F8.0. When increased, the aperture of the lens becomes smaller prohibiting the amount of light that reaches the light sensor. To compensate for lighting, you must either use a flash; extend your shutter times or other sources of light. For still subjects, extended shutter times normally suffice, however, if your subject is on the move you will need to use a flash to prevent the image from blurring.

Using a tripod can also help, especially if you are waiting for you're subject to appear or you are shooting still. This will prevent movement, which can be detrimental when working in macro photography. You will also need a release on your tripod. This will also allow you to move your camera around while securely attached.

Macro photography can be a real art form if executed properly. Subjects/objects are explored that are normally difficult to see with the naked eye and your vision for what makes a good image is heightened. There is an abundance of subjects and objects to choose from, whether it's in your home or garden.

Firstly, you will need to think about what would make the subject/object interesting. Consider the texture, colour and shapes as well as a particular feature that would make a great shot. There are many ways to take a good macro image, and experimenting with angles that encompasses varied lighting can produce outstanding images. You can also build your own mini macro-studio in a simple box that is open at the top and at the front. You can drape it in any colour you like, for example; using black would marry well with objects of colour.

For your lighting you can simply clamp to reading lamps on the side, but make sure you use GE Reveal bulbs, these are not as harsh as normal light bulbs.

Macro photography is all about trial and error. You will bin most of your images until you get the hang of it. However, the results can be greatly rewarding, an art form that will allow you to explore your creative side that will be unique to you and you only.

Happy shooting.

Canon EF vs EF-s Lenses?

Ok. So I think someone from the photo shop told me the wrong thing.

I know that If I use a 100mm EF lens on a Canon Rebel Xti,
the smaller sized sensor will effectively make my 100mm lens about a 160 lens.

Someone told me that the EF-s Lenses will not have this conversion factor when used with a Canon rebel xti camera

I think the person told me the wrong thing. From my understanding BOTH types of lenses will have the conversion factor when used with a rebel Xti.

Now, If I was to use the 100mm EF on a full sized sensor, such as with the 5D, then I would get 100mm. AND, I would not be able to use the EF-s lens on the full size sensor. Am I correct??

Thanks

BigTomz is correct, you still have a conversion factor for both since the size of the lens is the distance from the sensor to the end of the lens(I might be wrong on this point but thats how I understand it). And you are also correct that you will not be able to use the ef-s lens on any full size sensor camera or 35mm film camera. It wont even let you put it on it.

The EF lenses are made for 35mm or full frame sensors. The EF-s lenses how ever are designed for aps-c sized sensors and wouldn't show the image all the way out to the edges of a full framed sensor.

The conversion factor is a little tricky. Its not really a zoom factor. Since the sensor is smaller than a patch of 35mm film its more like a crop factor. The lens delivers the same size of image to be captured but there is less capturing because its not as wide or tall as normal 35mm film. Since most people print digital and film on the same size sheets and compare them side by side (i.e. 4x6 to 4x6, 8x10 to 8x10, etc.) and the digital having less image is naturally enlarged it appears to be zoomed in, but its actually just cropped and enlarged for all intensive purposes.

Whats the big difference? Two things I can think of:
1. Camera salesmen want to make it sound apealling to the consumer. It sounds better to say "Its like having a zoom already" rather than this huge speall I am doing now.
2. A true zoom would have clearer pictures, where as this crop and enlarge will have softer effects. But you probably wont even notice the difference unless you are blowing up your pictures pretty big.

What is the best Canon lens for wedding photography?

Pictures will be taken at both the church and the reception. Also, there will be both directed poses and photojournalism. Thanks.

There is really no way to encapsulate everything you would need for a wedding with only one lens. No two weddings are really the same, so your needs will differ, but one thing is for certain is that you will need a backup of everything, especially if you're the main photographer for the event. Anything that could go wrong may actually go wrong at your event.

For fixed pose portraits, I generally use a prime lens. I use the 50mm f/1.8 lens ($80) and the 85mm f/1.8 lens ($340). These lenses give you the capability to really blur out the background with beautiful bokeh and generally sharp image quality. If you want another step up from the 50 1.8, you can consider the 50 1.4 ($310) or even the 1.2 ($1400). Another step up from the 85 would be the 85mm f1.2 ($1600). You really need a fast prime lens for those low-light situations at the church and the reception.

For zoom lenses, basically, the faster you can go, the better. For a mid range lens, the favored lenses seem to be the 24-70 f/2.8 as fhotace said, or the 24-105 f/4 IS lens. You need something that can capture well in low light, sometimes without flash. If you can't get that close to the altar during the ceremony, you might need a lens like the 70-200 f/2.8 as well. None of these are cheap- they all run at >=$1100.

Besides lenses, you also need flashes and other lighting equipment for things like posed photography. I have two Canon 580EX II flashes with battery packs. You may also need to invest in some studio strobes from a company like Alien Bees.

Basically, if you are going to be the main photographer, you need to make sure you have backups of EVERYTHING. Things from equipment being dropped to inadvertant splashes of champagne can mean the difference between ruined memories and a well-paying job. Make sure you know what's going on before you dive in. I've included a link to a reputable site with good recommendations for wedding photography.

I have noticed a trend recently in wedding photographer's web pages of trying to clear up the confusion over the various styles of wedding photography. New names have emerged for these styles: Documentary, Illustrative, Fine Art, Classic, Contemporary, the now familiar Photojournalism and of course Traditional. Also we now hear photographers talking at length about how they only shoot weddings using "available light" and promise you that they won't use flash.

The other hot topic is the discussion of the benefits of various types of camera equipment: The advantages of full frame cameras, or is Nikon better than Canon, etc. Much of this information has been posted to supposedly help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of all these approaches. However, when you read further, you often see that there is a slant towards the equipment or style used by that particular photographer. I recently read a web page where the photographer warned the reader to beware of wedding photographer's who still shoot weddings using the traditional approach because it obviously means that they are using outdated equipment. Huh? So what does all this tell you? The answer: Nothing!

A few months ago I attended a seminar by one of the leading wedding photographers in the country. Her input on this subject was enlightening. Although she, herself used digital capture and some film, she emphasized that what really matters is how the photographs look. Do they have impact? Do they tell the story of the day? She went on to say that she is growing tired of other photographers always asking her what type of camera she uses or what the benefits are of digital over film, etc, etc. "Lets talk about the photographs!" she exclaimed. She talked about how lucky we are in this era to have access to such great equipment and that even some of the lowest cost equipment can be used to make beautiful images.

I could not agree more. At
Dubnoff Wedding Photography
our philosophy is that what really matters is the end result - your wedding album. 25 years after your wedding you are not going to care if your wedding photographer used a $10,000 camera or a Kodak disposable camera. Will you remember if you hired a photojournalist or an illustrative photographer? Probably not. Its the photos that you will remember and cherish. I do use some of the most modern and up to date camera equipment, but I am not obsessed with it. I spend more of my time trying to figure out how to make the most memorable and artistic images possible. This is not accomplished by simply going out and purchasing a $1,800 lens that is so sharp that it pratically allows you to see the pores on your subject's face. Sharp, high quality lenses are important, but it is what the photographer does with them that matters. Find a photographer who talks about the images and not about how great his equipment is.

However, there are other factors important when choosing a wedding photographer. Developing rapport with your photographer is vital. A rude or bossy photographer can ruin a wedding for both the bride and groom. Look for photographers you are comfortable talking to. Make sure they can give you references and when you check those references ask how the photographer behaved at the wedding. Did he or she spend a lot of time eating food and drinking alcohol? Did he or she get along well with the guests? Calm Demeanor? Unobtrusive? Obviously, you want to make sure the photos are great, but these other factors can make or break your wedding photography experience.

You need the long wide aperture lens (70 - 200mm f2.8) from fotoaces suggestions.

Aperture priority is the norm for most photography, shutter priority may select a high ISO (after it has run out of larger apertures to select) which will lead to noise, if your shooting for a newspaper the resolution of newsprint means that noise isn't a problem, it is very much a problem if you're shooting for magazines.

Colour balance isn't a problem with a DSLR as you can calibrate it on site with nothing more than a piece of white paper.

This baby is furnished with Optical Image Stabilizer (that is what the IS in S2 IS stands for) that eliminates camera shakes for people who have shaky hands or for taking camera shots. The UD lens found in this canon digital camera provide amazing color accuracy throughout the whole zoom area.

As with many digital cameras nowadays, this certain canon digital camera can record moving pictures. Now with another first, the S2 allows you to record moving pictures, and there no use for missing a perfect image incorporated with that moving picture. With the Movie Snap feature, just snap away when you see that perfect image, and it will be saved in your canon digital camera along with the recorded video.

This canon digital camera is also equipped with the DIGIC II Image processor that is designed to increase processing speed and image quality. It instantly says that with the DIGIC II, your canon digital camera has faster start-up time, playback and auto focus while giving your images the absolute brilliance.

The S2 also support USB 2.0 Hi-speed standard, so you will always have the easiest time transferring your files to and from your computer. With the USB 2.0, you can take advantage of your super hi-speed SD card.

This canon digital camera is also supplied with a 1.8 inch LCD power saving and fold out screen that’s 115,000 pixel resolution. S2 shoots at 30 frames per second; this shooting rate can be reduced when taking pictures in night display, to give you the brightness that you need when taking pictures.

On the other hand, the latest point and shoot canon digital camera is the PowerShot SD500 and the PowerShot SD400.

The SD500 is the first 7.1 mega pixel canon digital camera that gives amazing images and absolutely to die for details. It has a 3x optical zoom that enables close up shooting with a 37-111mm equivalent with a 35mm film camera. This is one of the new perpetual curve design for a canon digital camera that fits the hands perfectly.

Sporting a very slim design, you would marvel at its 2.0 inch LCD that gives easier frame and play back use.

This baby is also equipped with the same DIGIC II Image Processor found in canon digital cameras that gives you amazing features. Also USB 2.0 compatible and works with the same high-speed SD card.

Even better than most digital cameras out there, this gadget can shoot moving images to up to 60 frames per second- perfect for moving objects (especially in sports) and a 30 frames per second for shooting still images. Furnished with scene modes like portrait (blurs the background and focuses on your subject), foliage (perfect for foliage, greenery or blossoms), beach (sunny shots without the dark faces), underwater (reduced background scatter. Tip: you can always buy waterproof case for shooting underwater images), fireworks, night snapshot, kids and pets, indoor, snow and digital macro (larger than life images).

These are just some of the many features of the SD500. There are more to the SD500 that has yet to be discussed. Check canon’s website at www.usa.canon.com <http://www.usa.canon.com> for a full profile of the SD500 and to other latest releases and products.

How do I calibrate my Canon Xsi camera lens?

I have a Canon XSI with the 18-55mm lens kit. Everytime I take a photo, it's slightly blurry. I've tried using it in different lighting, using different settings etc, nothing works. I think maybe the lens need to be calibrated. How do I do this?
Yes IS is turned on, and the only mode I ever shoot in is fully manual. I will try changing the focus metering and see what happens.

Have you tried using the centre AF point only? This is often more accurate than multi point AF, because you know exactly where your focal point is...and with multi AF, the camera doesn't always focus on the subject you want.

You can't use it in Basic mode, though...so, try using P (Program AE) or Av (Aperture Priority) or Tv (Shutter Priority).

Also, if you're shooting moving objects, it's best to change your AF mode to AI Servo AF or AI Focus AF...rather than One-Shot AF.

All the above things are clearly explained in your Instruction Manual...

p.s. you do have you IS turned on, don't you?

Personally, I would choose the Canon Rebel XSi unless I had some extra cash that I did not know what to do with. And I have some excellent reasons. Canon has been at the top of the digital camera market, and in particular at the top of the DSLR market (along with Nikon) forever. Their Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras are all excellent. You could not make a mistake by purchasing any of them.

Even the lowest of the Canon DSLR line, the Canon Rebels, are rated very highly by all the camera review websites. While there are plenty of really good cameras to choose from other than a Canon, not every one of them is a great choice, and you would have to do some serious research before making your buying decision unless you had some inside information from a professional photographer friend. But buying a Canon DSLR is a no-brainer. They are all good. You will be really impressed with the quality of the images.

OK, so why choose the Rebel XSi over the T1i? It's because of the price. The XSi is more than $150 cheaper than it's younger cousin, the T1i. And for the novice photographer (which is what most of us are when we are buying our first entry level DSLR) the technology differences of the two cameras are pretty much non-existent. The exception is the HD video. If you must have video in your digital camera, then you should get a Canon Rebel T1i. Otherwise, go with the XSi.

Use the $150 dollars you save to buy an extra lens or a tripod.

Bottom line if you are asking yourself the question "which Canon Rebel should I buy".. You can't make a mistake, because they are both fantastic. Buying a Canon Rebel XSi or T1i will transform your photographic life, especially if you get that extra lens. Make it a macro or a zoom lens to give yourself a bit more flexibility.

You may want to take a look at the actual specs on each of these cameras. There is a great comparison at http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com.

The EF lens mount is the standard lens mount on the Canon EOS family of SLR film and digital cameras. EF stands for "Electro-Focus": automatic focusing on EF lenses is handled by a dedicated electric motor built into the lens. Mechanically, it is a bayonet-style mount, and all communication between camera and lens takes place through electrical contacts; there are no mechanical levers or plungers....

How do I remove the rear lens cap from a Canon lens?

Someone has donated a 135mm f2.8 Vivitar short telephoto lens to a charity shop that I have been helping at. The lens has a canon rear lens cap fitted so I assume it is a canon mount.
I tried to remove the cap to check the rear elements for fungus etc but it does not budge. I have tried a reasonable degree of force both anti clockwise and clockwise. I have also tried pushing and pulling for a bayonet type fitting. There are no obvious lugs or buttons and the lens mount looks like it has three bayonet slots that engage with a clockwise movement.
Can anyone help? I don't want to damage the lens and my reputation as the shops photographic equipment specialist is at stake.
Thanks.

You most likely have an older Canon FD mount lens (discontinued and replaced by the current EF series). To remove the rear lenscam, rotate the chrome ring at the base of the lens. When it rotates, it will unlock the cap. To replace the rear cap or to mount the lens on an older Canon camera, twist the chrome ring in the opposite direction.

One of the best lenses that I would recommend for your Canon EOS camera would be the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lens. While this lens has its drawbacks, it's an unbeatable value for the money.

This lens was one of the first lenses that Canon released with the EOS system in 1987, so it's been in production for over 20 years. As such, this lens is rather high-quality compared to lenses designed today. It has a metal lens mount, and a very sturdy plastic body. This is a standard EF lens, meaning that it will work on any Canon EOS camera, digital or film - this includes newer digital cameras such as the Digital Rebel series, EOS 10D/20D/30D/40D, and high-end cameras such as the EOS 1D and 5D.

This lens is (as the name implies) rather compact and lightweight, so it's easy to carry around. Focusing is very reliable, but a little noisier and slower than newer EF lenses. Optics in this lens are very high-quality, and allow for beautiful photos.

The lens allows for macro focusing of objects up to a ratio of 1:2 life size. What this means is that the smallest objects that the lens can focus will be recorded on your film (or in the case of a digital camera, image sensor) at half their real-life size. This lens also allows for infinity focus, a capability that some macro lenses lack. This means that you can use this lens as a regular 50mm lens. In addition to photography of small objects, it is excellent for practically everything. Its narrow depth of field allows for a beautiful "bokeh" effect which is wonderful for portraits!

Some more expensive macro lenses can focus at "life-size", meaning that the smallest objects that can be focused will be recorded on the film or image sensor at the same size that they are in real-life. Alone, the Compact Macro lacks this capability. However, you can purchase the Canon Life-Size Converter, which will allow for you to focus up to life-size, allowing you to take even more detailed photographs of tiny objects!

Overall, the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lens is an unbeatable value for what you get, and an essential must-have for any Canon EOS owner that can afford it!
